On November 18, at the Irish Repertory Theatre, Dr. Mick Moloney, professor of Music and Irish Studies at New York University, and I will be hosting a concert to benefit the Mercy Centre in Bangkok, Thailand. Mercy Centre is a non-profit, non-denominational organization founded over 40 years ago by Father Joe Maier, a Redemptorist priest, and Sister Maria Chantavaradom. Since its inception, the community-based organization has been helping the poorest of the poor in the poorest of slums in Bangkok.
Through its outreach program, Mercy Centre operates several kindergartens to prepare children for regular school and enable their parents to continue to work. In 40 years, Mercy Centre has graduated more than 50,000 children. Many have gone on to college and become teachers, nurses, artists and administrators.
Mercy Centre is also a shelter for abandoned, trafficked and street children. It provides legal assistance to youth offenders and a hospice and home for mothers and children living with HIV/AIDS. Mercy Centre also helps rebuild homes devastated by floods and fires that are so frequent in the slums. Its facilities are a haven for people in desperate need. I hope you agree it deserves our support.
The concert will showcase some of the most noted musicians in the tri state area. We also hope to have some surprise guests. There will also be a pre-show reception compliments of Mr. John Browne of the Grandstand Bar and Restaurant in Elmhurst.
Thanks to the generosity of the Directors of the Irish Repertory Theater, Charlotte Moore and Ciaran O Reilly, the theater is free of charge for this occasion. As a result, every penny earned will go to Mercy Centre through Mercy Center USA. Mercy Centre USA is a registered 501(c)(3) non-profit charity which assures that your contribution is tax deductible. All checks should be made payable to Mercy Centre USA or you may donate via PayPal from this website.
As ardent admirers of the mission of Mercy Centre, Dr. Mick Moloney and I have visited and experienced first hand the excellent work being carried out by everybody associated with Mercy. We both appreciate the great assistance that Mercy Centre gives to mothers and children who otherwise would live a life of hopeless desperation.
Mary Cahill, a great friend of Mercy Centre, has spent most of her professional life working for UNICEF. Mary has offered to help coordinate this fundraising effort. All donations will be personally acknowledged by True Rowan, Vice-Chairman and Treasurer of Mercy Centre USA.
I close in the hope that you will come and enjoy our concert and learn more about our favorite charity. Hopefully, it will become one of your favorites too.
